A major UK supermarket chain is at risk of shutting 34 branches – in a massive blow for consumers and customers. The Co-operative, which is rivalled by Lidl , Morrisons , Aldi , Asda , Sainsbury’s and Tesco , could close 34 branches. 34 stores and nine funeral homes across Essex could shut – if a proposed merger between Chelmsford Star Co-operative and Central Co-op fails to gain member approval. Chelmsford Star Co-op has insisted there are currently no plans to shut any supermarkets or funeral homes should it merge with Central Co-op. A spokesman said: “As with any business integration, there will be a period of transition where the combined Society will review how best to organise itself to meet the needs of its members and communities. READ MORE State pension age could change for millions born in the 1970s “While no decisions have been made at this early stage, we can confirm there are no planned closures of Chelmsford Star food stores, funeral homes or travel agencies as part of the proposed transfer. “Some support functions may evolve over time to ensure the organisation is fit for purpose and sustainable long-term, but this would be done with care, transparency and engagement with colleagues, members and unions. Importantly, the focus of both Societies is to safeguard as many roles and services as possible.” Chief executives of Chelmsford Star and Central Co-ops, Barry Wood and Debbie Robinson, said: “This is an incredibly exciting moment for co-operation.
