In a significant diplomatic gesture underscoring the deepening ties between Ghana and India, President John Dramani Mahama has conferred one of the country鈥檚 highest honours 鈥 Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana 鈥 on visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The state honour, presented during a brief ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, July 2, reflects Ghana鈥檚 appreciation for India鈥檚 long-standing support and its growing role in the West African nation鈥檚 development agenda.
Accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi described the recognition as not only a personal honour but also a symbol of responsibility 鈥 one he said compels India to further strengthen its partnership with Ghana.
The Indian leader鈥檚 visit, marked by high-level discussions and a joint press conference at the Jubilee House, signaled renewed urgency in expanding cooperation between the two countries across critical sectors.
President Mahama used the occasion to outline Ghana鈥檚 ambitions for a strengthened bilateral agenda, noting shared priorities in trade, agriculture, clean energy, technology and youth empowerment.
鈥淲e agreed on the urgency of deepening our collaboration in areas of shared strategic interest, particularly in agriculture, agribusiness and renewable energy, digital innovation, health and youth empowerment,鈥 President Mahama said.
India has been a key development partner for Ghana, providing concessional financing, technical assistance, and investment in infrastructure projects. Among India鈥檚 notable contributions are the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, the Elmina Fish Processing Plant, the Komenda Sugar Factory, and the Tema-Mpakadan railway project 鈥 initiatives that have helped boost Ghana鈥檚 industrial and technological capacity.
The visit marks a high point in Ghana鈥揑ndia relations and sets the stage for further engagement at both governmental and private sector levels.
As the two leaders concluded their remarks, the message was clear: a stronger, more strategic partnership lies ahead, built on decades of goodwill and a shared commitment to inclusive growth and innovation.
