One doorstep after another Glenn Bedingfield, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Cleanliness, writes: A new pilot scheme designed to assist senior citizens and Blue Badge holders in their recycling efforts under the Beverage Container Refund Scheme (BCRS) has been launched. The initiative aims to address the challenges some members of our community face in accessing recycling facilities, particularly when it comes to returning containers for refunds. The pilot project, which will run until early next year, introduces two key components: a door-to-door collection service for eligible individuals and the staffing of 11 high-demand BCRS sites to ensure better accessibility and support. By bringing the service directly to people’s homes and improving the experience at high-demand locations, we aim to make recycling easier and more efficient for everyone. We understand that, while many people are making significant efforts to recycle, physical limitations, transport issues and accessibility concerns can be real barriers, especially for older residents and those with disabilities. This scheme is a recognition of the commitment these individuals already make, and it is our way of supporting them in continuing their positive environmental contributions. Recycling is a shared responsibility, and we believe no one should be left behind in the journey towards a greener future. This project shows commitment to care for our environment. We know that challenges like these do not solve themselves. Without targeted support and meaningful intervention, there is a risk that recyclable materials will end up in landfills and that vulnerable groups will be excluded from the benefits of the BCRS scheme. That’s why we stepped in. By intervening now, we are not only improving current recycling practices but also laying the groundwork for a system that is fair and accessible to all. The 11 sites selected for additional staffing have been chosen based on volume of use and feedback from the community. Trained personnel will be on site to assist users and ensure the smooth functioning of each location. At the same time, the door-to-door service will offer scheduled collections for eligible residents, helping to reduce the need for travel and effort on their part. By early next year, the project will expand to include all localities. For the time being, the pilot project will be carefully monitored and evaluated throughout its duration, and we welcome feedback from all participants. In launching this scheme, we are not only responding to a need but we are reinforcing our commitment to environmental responsibility. We thank all those who continue to recycle and invite the community to support this initiative in any way they can. One doorstep after another, we can create a cleaner, sustainable future.
