TOKYO – Nissan Motor Co. is exploring a partnership with Taiwan’s electronics giant Foxconn in the electric vehicle sector, a source familiar with the matter said Sunday.

The plan under consideration would involve producing Foxconn’s EVs at Nissan’s signature Oppama plant near Tokyo, which had previously been eyed for closure, the source added.

KAGOSHIMA, Japan – More people evacuated from small islands in southwestern Japan on Sunday as quakes continued to rattle the area, heading to the closest main island of Kyushu.

A total of 46 residents of Akuseki and Kodakara in the Tokara island chain boarded a ferry in the morning, local authorities said, the second batch of evacuees to leave for Kagoshima, following 13 residents of Akuseki who evacuated on Friday.

Japan’s real wages in May fall 2.9%, down for 5th straight month

TOKYO – Japan’s real wages fell 2.9 percent in May from a year earlier, marking the fifth consecutive monthly decline and the sharpest drop in nearly two years, as pay growth continued to lag behind persistent inflation, government data showed Monday.

The latest decline in real wages — a barometer of consumer purchasing power — accelerated from a revised 2.0 percent decline in April and marked the largest drop since September 2023 due largely to lower bonuses, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said.

China’s vice premier to visit Japan for expo event in Osaka on Fri.

TOKYO – Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng plans to visit Japan for a World Exposition event in Osaka on Friday, with Japanese lawmakers looking to request a new lease of giant pandas to promote bilateral ties, diplomatic sources said Sunday.

Friday marks China’s national day at the expo. During his stay in Japan, he is expected to meet with Hiroshi Moriyama, secretary general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, who leads a cross-party group of China-friendly Japanese lawmakers.

Japan eyes export of used destroyers to Philippines to counter China

TOKYO – Japan is considering exporting used Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers to the Philippines, as the key U.S. allies deepen security cooperation amid China’s assertive maritime posture, a government source said Sunday.

Defense Minister Gen Nakatani and his Philippine counterpart Gilberto Teodoro discussed the plan when they met in Singapore in June, the Japanese source said.

DHARAMSALA, India – The Dalai Lama turned 90 on Sunday, days after he said his successor would be chosen by identifying his reincarnation after death, amid deepening conflict with China over who can recognize the next Tibetan Buddhist leader.
