Late-night study sessions could soon be on the cards for students within the City of Karratha, as the council considers launching a trial for a 24/7 library.
An alternative motion was brought forward by Cr Kelly Nunn at the June 30 ordinary council meeting, requesting that the council consider a pilot trial of opening one or more library facilities 24/7.
It was also requested that the chief executive investigate an extension of hours at the Karratha and Wickham libraries during weekday evenings and over the weekend, with a report for thecouncil鈥檚 consideration to be presented at the October council meeting.
鈥淚 would like to acknowledge the original motion 鈥 as an ex-dream of being a librarian as a child 鈥 opening a library 24/7 sounds like dream come true, unfortunately, the reality doesn鈥檛 really lend itself to probability,鈥 Cr Nunn said.
鈥淚 do think that this is a great opportunity to consider what our other options are to make sure that more of our community members can access the library at more available hours, particularly for students that are at school all day, or people that are at work all day.
鈥淲e do know that libraries are a hub for more than just accessing books, so it鈥檚 important that we do utilise these services.
鈥淗opefully we can come back with something that is suitable and safe.鈥
Cr Waterstrom Muller, who seconded the motion, added that any changes must also consider staff capacity and the feasibility of extended hours.
