Jeff Bezos’ $500 Million Superyacht Sparks Fierce Backlash—Critics Say “It’s Like a Hotel Running on Water”

We wish we were all fortunate enough to live a life like billionaire founder Jeff Bezos. The former president and CEO of Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce and cloud computing company, who has a net worth of more than $180 billion, is living his best life at 61. He’s not shy about spending his hard-earned fortune and makes sure the tabloids take note of that, too.

One of Jeff’s cherished investments has to be his more than $500 million superyacht, Koru (meaning new beginnings), which happens to be one of the most expensive yachts ever built. Still, at 417 feet long, it’s also among the largest yachts that stand out with an estimated annual maintenance cost of $25 million; a $2,400 daily docking fee barely registers for the newly married billionaire.

As per sources, the luxurious yacht Koru consists of three sprawling decks, a swimming pool, a gym, and MTU diesel engines power all of it. However, besides the summer sundowner parties, Jeff Bezos and his loved ones enjoy, Koru’s environmental impact has sparked criticism. The superyacht reportedly emits over 7,000 tons of CO₂ annually and contributes to water, light, noise, and wastewater pollution.

American anthropologist Richard Wilk has been outspoken about the excessive carbon footprint of such luxury vessels. “The emissions of superyachts are way above anything else,” he told The Guardian. “They require a full-time crew and constant maintenance, even when they’re not in use.”

Wilk pointed out how using superyachts has become a symbol of the ultra-rich businessman and said that. “It is like having a hotel running on the water all the time.” The yacht can host 18 guests and 36 crew, has contradicts Jeff Bezos’s mission to help fight climate change, as he has previously promised to spend $10 billion over 10 years through the Bezos Earth Fund.

In addition, Dario Kenner, author of ‘Carbon Inequality: The Role of the Richest in Climate Change, said, “There is an emotional and physical disconnect from the rich and climate change,” He claimed that the poor class often live near refineries, severely polluted areas or landfills as the price of land is cheaper in those areas and the truth is that the wealthy and ultra- rich class is disconnected from the real essence of climate change.

Last month, an Amazon employee talked about his “true feeling” about Jeff Bezos and his filthy rich lifestyle in a Reddit post, which went viral. He highlighted the lavish features of Koru and sarcastically advised fellow Amazon employees, “Make sure to work harder so he can buy a second one.”

The thread began on a subreddit with the name r/AmazonFC made for “current, former and potential Amazon employees to discuss and connect.” While the comments were mixed when it came to users voicing out their opinions, Jeff Bezos really does not care! When will netizens realize that successful people like Bezos do not care about the online chatter that surrounds their lives? They simply enjoy it as media attention and use it as propaganda to stay relevant when needed.

On the personal front, Jeff Bezos tied the knot with his long-term partner Lauren Sánchez on June 27, 2025, in a $50 million lavish ceremony in Venice, Italy. The wedding featured a private guest list, which included A-list names like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, the Kardashian-Jenner clan, and many others. The wedding saw gondolas, megayachts, and enough paparazzi for actors in a film premiere to feel shadowed.

A lot of people might be curious as to why Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez chose the wedding venue in Venice and not America. The real reason behind this was that the couple got engaged in August 2023 and celebrated with a party on Koru near Positano, so it made sense for their wedding to also be in Italy.

Hence, Venice wasn’t picked by accident. According to The Times, the city worked hard to host the big event. Morris Ceron, a Venice city official, even asked fashion designer Domenico Dolce to help convince Bezos and Sánchez. “Seven months ago, Dolce told me Bezos was getting married. I started working right away to bring the wedding to Venice,” Ceron told the local paper Il Gazzettino. (via ELLE Decor)

Jeff has been married once before to American novelist MacKenzie Scott, and Lauren Sánchez has reportedly been engaged four times, first to sportscaster Rory Markas, then to athlete Anthony Miller in 1996, then to Tony Gonzalez, with whom she shares her son, Nico Gonzalez. Lauren was also engaged to actor Henry Simmons after her split with Gonzalez. The two, however, separated in 2004. Sánchez then met Patrick Whitesell, whom she married in 2005, and the couple shares two children.

The internet has a lot of negative things to say about Lauren, and several media reports have slammed her looks (plastic surgery rumors), her past choices, and her alleged attempt to live off Bezos, but does the billionaire businessman care? No! All he cares about is buying another lavish yacht so he and his wife can go on a luxurious cruise and make memories. At the same time, the unnecessary chatter can be the perfect background noise for them. (really)!
