Sean Trott says he is heading to the International Island Games with a renewed sense of confidence after finally getting the 鈥渕onkey off his back鈥 by winning the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby.

Trott delivered a commanding performance to claim his first May 24 title this year 鈥 a breakthrough victory that brought immense relief after four previous runner-up finishes.

He will compete in the 10,000 and half-marathon at the Games in Orkney 鈥 an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland 鈥 which begin on Saturday [June 12].

鈥淸Winning May 24] is definitely a monkey off my back 鈥 it鈥檚 something I鈥檇 thought about for a long time,鈥 Trott told Bernews.

鈥淭he level of support from the community has been phenomenal 鈥 the amount of people honking horns and calling out. There鈥檚 been a huge outpouring of support.

鈥淣ow that objective has been achieved, I can broaden my horizons a bit.鈥

The 35-year-old aims to add to the three bronze medals he won at the 2011 Isle of Wight Games in the 10,000, half-marathon, and half-marathon team event.

Ever the student of the sport, Trott has been studying his competition in detail 鈥 analysing his competitors鈥 performances to set clear targets.

鈥淢y confidence is high, and I know I can push a bit harder and maybe win a medal or two,鈥 he said.

鈥淚鈥檒l probably prioritise the half-marathon. That鈥檚 not to say I won鈥檛 be giving it my all in the 10,000!

鈥淚鈥檝e researched my competitors and checked their times this year compared to their times at previous games.

鈥淚鈥檝e a range of times that I need to run to medal 鈥 I think I鈥檓 capable of that.

鈥淭he level of the competition has improved, so you have to come improving.鈥

Joining Trott in Bermuda鈥檚 athletics team in Orkney will be Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby women鈥檚 winner Gayle Lindsay along with Jake Brislane, Tony Bean and Philip Woolins.

鈥淩epresenting Bermuda is not something you get to do all of time,鈥 he added. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an extra special opportunity.鈥
