Ishaan Khatter Reveals He Earned Rs 10 Lakh For His Debut Film: ‘It Was A Very Big Deal’

While Ishaan Khatter’s first commercial success came with Dharma Productions’ Dhadak (2018) alongside Janhvi Kapoor, his actual Bollywood debut came earlier, Majid Majidi’s 2017 film Beyond the Clouds. In a recent conversation, Ishaan disclosed his salary for Beyond the Clouds, stating that he earned about Rs 10 lakhs for the film, which he considered a significant sum at the time.
While speaking with Mid Day about how much he was paid for his debut film, he said, “For me at that time, it was a very big deal. I started with about 10 lakhs for Beyond the Clouds. So I started from there, and that is a significant amount more than actors would get, say, 30 years ago, and also with inflation and everything.”
He reflected on his early career, saying that earning at the age of 21 allowed him to contribute financially, and that his brother Shahid Kapoor was the main earning member at that point. “But for me, it was a 21-year-old, I had started to earn, and then I started to contribute in my own way in the family. My brother was the main earning member at that point. It felt great. And I think that’s obviously something that plays a big hand in your self-confidence going forward. But somehow I had to train my mind to adapt to the business side of things,” he said.
The 2017 drama ‘Beyond The Clouds’ directed by Majid Majidi stars Ishaan Khatter as Amir and Malvika Mohanan as Tara. The film explores the relationship between siblings, focusing on their bond, which is put to the test when Tara is imprisoned for a crime committed by Amir.
After Beyond The Clouds, he starred in Dhadak alongside Janhvi Kapoor, and has since expanded his career into international waters with the British series A Suitable Boy (2020) and the American miniseries The Perfect Couple (2024).
Most recently, he starred in the Netflix series ‘The Royals’ alongside Bhumi Pednekar. He will also be seen in Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Karan Johar, which had its big premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025.
