2. Test the Battery: If your battery is a few years old or has been giving you trouble, it’s worth having it tested before a long drive. A flat battery in a remote area is the last thing you want. Signs of corrosion or slow engine turnover are red flags.
3. Top Up Fluids: Check and top up all essential fluids — engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, windscreen washer, and transmission fluid. These are vital to keep your car running smoothly and prevent damage to key components.
4. Inspect Lights and Wipers: Visibility is critical, especially on unfamiliar roads. Make sure all your lights — headlights, brake lights, indicators — are working. Replace worn wiper blades so you’re ready for any sudden rain.
5. Test Your Brakes: If your brakes are squealing, vibrating, or feel less responsive than usual, it’s time for a check. Worn brake pads or low fluid can compromise stopping distance — a serious safety concern on high-speed roads.
6. Review Your Emergency Kit: Ensure your vehicle has a first aid kit, torch, jumper leads, and basic tools. A few spare items like water, snacks, and a phone charger can also make a big difference in a pinch.
7. Schedule a Professional Check: Even if everything looks fine on the surface, scheduling regular car servicing before a big trip is a smart move. Trained mechanics can spot issues you might miss, giving you peace of mind for the kilometres ahead.
Planning a road trip is exciting, but safety should always come first. Taking the time to properly prepare your vehicle ensures you can enjoy the drive, the scenery, and the memories — without the stress of car trouble along the way.
