Based on confidential information, officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department conducted a surprise raid at a residence near Ganeshpura in Suratkal. The operation uncovered an unlawful LPG refilling unit where domestic cooking gas cylinders were being misused to fill other cylinders, which were then sold at inflated commercial prices.
Authorities have booked a case against Shafaqat Ali, who is accused of masterminding and managing the entire illegal enterprise. According to the preliminary investigation, the accused was operating discreetly to avoid detection, sourcing domestic LPG meant strictly for household consumption and diverting it for profit.
During the inspection, officials confiscated a total of 23 LPG cylinders of various sizes along with several pieces of equipment employed to transfer gas from one cylinder to another. The seized apparatus included weighing scales, rubber pipes, adapters, and sealing tools that facilitated the clandestine activity.
Officers stated that such unauthorized refilling poses significant risks, including potential explosions, fire hazards, and threats to public safety, apart from causing revenue losses to the government.
Officials further clarified that strict legal action will be initiated under the Essential Commodities Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code to curb such practices. The department has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious gas handling activities in their locality to prevent similar dangerous operations.
The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests may follow based on additional evidence.
