An Ibrox disaster survivor who spent his 91st birthday in hospital was over the moon when he received a surprise visit from three Rangers legends, as well as a call from Ally McCoist. Lifelong Gers supporter Thomas Daniels was expecting a rather dull birthday after sadly being admitted to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. However, the power of social media gave the devoted Teddy Bears fan a birthday he could never forget. On the day of Thomas’ 91st birthday, Sunday June 22, his family got in touch with Ibrox Radio with the aim of reaching former players, hoping that at least one would be free to visit their unwell dad, reports Glasgow Live. With the help of Oswald’s Bar, on Monday June 23, Thomas received a visit from Gordon Smith, Alex MacDonald (known as Doddie) and Charlie Miller, as well as a special phone call from Ally McCoist and a video message from John Brown. Hundreds of people online sent their well-wishes to the 91-year-old, who travelled the country as a Rangers quiz master. He also received a heap of goodies, a birthday cake and a Gers themed balloon display. Thomas’ son Tommy said the family were “blown away” by the response, with fans and Ibrox Radio all saying the same thing, “this is what the Rangers family is all about”. In the heartwarming call with Ally McCoist, Thomas jokingly says “it’s no everyday I’m 50”, making Super Ally burst into a fit of giggles, to which Thomas replies “I don’t know why you’re laughing”. The interaction warmed the hearts of thousands with nearly seven-thousand likes on the post and over 400 comments. Thomas’ daughter Janette Hunter said she was “a privilege” to witness her dad have a chat with Gordon Smith . She said: “I was lucky enough to be up when the lovely Gordon Smith visited my dad. So much information going back and forth between them about the days gone by and the hopes for the future for our club, it was a privilege to sit there. “Also, the phone call from Super Ally, my dad was completely overwhelmed by them both, so glad to see the other pics with Doddie and Charlie , thank you so much everyone for today, best fans, best club”. Positive comments came flooding in. Adele Ward wrote: “This is what football is all about. Thanking those loyal supporters that truly love their club “, Neil Wilson added: “Best wishes auld fella from a Hibs supporter. Great touch from all the old players. I bet it meant the world to him”.
