A long stretch of the M60 in Stockport remains closed on Monday afternoon after a collision involving four HGVs and four cars. National Highways said the section of motorway was expected to ‘remain closed in both directions for a substantial amount of time’ as emergency services remain at the scene and a clean-up operation gets underway. A recovery process to move the lorries and cars involved has also started. National Highways’ latest traffic reports – published on its website – suggest the cloure could extend well into Monday night rush-hour. The agency said the ‘event’ wasn’t expected to clear fully until between 7.15pm and 7.30pm, although times could obviously change. National Highways staff remain at the scene, with a closure in force in both directions between junction 25 for Bredbury Interchange and the A560 in Stockport , and junction one at Pyramid Roundabout. As reported, one of the HGVs is said to have shed its load of beer barrels onto the carriageways as a result. Another HGV involved in the smash crossed through the central reservation barrier and ‘struck several lamp columns’, the agency added. ‘Several’ ruptured fuel tanks have also been reported, with diesel spilling out onto the motorway surface.
