KUCHING, June 26: Thousands of parents and students in Miri鈥檚 rapidly developing northern suburbs are breathing a sigh of relief as the long-delayed construction of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tudan has finally resumed after nearly a decade of being stalled.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the long-abandoned project located in Tudan is expected to be completed by March 27, 2026, and begin operations by June that year.
This development brings renewed hope to thousands of students and parents in the Permyjaya, Vista Perdana, Desa Senadin, Tudan Jaya, and Lutong areas, who have long awaited a new school to accommodate the rapidly growing student population.
Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the project was reactivated with a new contractor awarded the tender in March this year, at a total cost of RM11.47 million.
Speaking during a site visit yesterday (June 25) with senior officials from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Sarawak Education Department, Lee said construction officially resumed on March 28, 2025.
鈥淎s of now, physical progress has reached 4.6 per cent while financial progress stands at 9.77 per cent, ahead of the original schedule,鈥 he said.
鈥淢any parents have been asking when this school can be used. Today, we finally see a ray of hope. This school is very important for fast-developing areas like Permyjaya and Tudan.鈥
Once completed, SMK Tudan will be equipped with 35 classrooms and can accommodate up to 1,260 students.
The school will operate in a single morning session, promising a more comfortable and conducive learning environment.
Its opening is expected to significantly reduce student congestion in nearby schools such as SMK Merbau, SMK Pujut, and SMK Lutong, each currently hosting between 2,800 and 3,000 students. 鈥 DayakDaily
