Hero police officer saves woman from Birmingham dog attack which nearly killed her

A brave police officer helped save a woman鈥檚 life after she was attacked by two dogs in Birmingham . It happened in Yardley in the early hours of Tuesday, May 23, 2024. West Midlands Police Sgt Paul Williams was on his own responding to the 999 call at around 2.20am and found a woman being mauled by two large German shepherd-type dogs. She suffered severe injuries, was in a critical condition and was said to have been 鈥榗lose to dying鈥 when Sgt Williams arrived. He got out of his car and both dogs charged at him. He attempted to Taser one of the dogs but it malfunctioned. After the attempt, the dogs turned on Sgt Williams forcing him to retreat to his car. But the courageous officer then checked his Taser and got out of his car again. He Tasered one of the dogs, incapacitating it, with the second dog attacking him and biting his arm. The Tasered dog recovered and both dogs then fled the scene, ending the attack. The woman was rushed to hospital and spent four weeks in intensive care. He sustained injuries to his arm that required medical attention but said they were 鈥榮uperficial鈥. The CCTV and body-worn footage is harrowing. 鈥淢embers of the public tried to intervene, throwing things out of their car windows at the dog or using their cars to try to push them off, but the dogs just carried on. 鈥淏eing on my own, I thought that if this goes wrong, there’s no-one there to help me.鈥 He continued: 鈥淚 assessed the Taser and what the malfunction might have been. 鈥淚 knew I had another shot, so went back out and managed to knock one to the ground. 鈥淭he second dog then charged at me, jumped up and latched onto my arm. 鈥淚 managed to shake it off and get back in my car, at which point the Taser finished its cycle on the first dog. 鈥淚t got up and ran off and the second dog followed it. 鈥淭he woman got into another police car and they took her to hospital.鈥 READ MORE: ‘My XL Bully has 88k Instagram followers and I have one message to the haters’ The sergeant added: 鈥淎s police officers, we鈥檙e the ones that are called, we鈥檙e the ones that need to take action, and we sign up to do that. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 just sit there and watch her get killed in front of me. 鈥淚f it wasn鈥檛 me, nobody else was going to do anything, so that鈥檚 what I did. 鈥淭hank goodness it was at that time of the morning and there wasn鈥檛 children and families around. 鈥淥nce the dogs ran off, my concern was that the next person they come across was in a lot of trouble. 鈥淟uckily they split up. Sgt Williams is now in the running for a Police Bravery Award, to be handed out on Thursday, July 10. Jess Davies, West Midlands Police Federation acting chair, said: 鈥淲e are all very aware of the threat posed by savage dogs and all too often have to deal with the tragic consequences of their attacks. 鈥淏ut despite this and the very real fear of being mauled himself, Paul showed incredible bravery and quick thinking to tackle two out-of-control animals. 鈥淚n true policing style, he put his own safety on the line to protect the public. 鈥淭here is no doubt in my mind that his actions saved the woman鈥檚 life, and who knows what else would have happened if those dogs were able to continue prowling the streets? 鈥淧aul did a fantastic job in a very frightening circumstances and his actions make him very deserving of his nomination.鈥
