National Doctors’ Day 2025: Every year on July 1, India commemorates National Doctors’ Day, paying tribute to the vital role medical professionals play in society. The date holds special significance, as it marks both the birth and death anniversaries of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician, freedom fighter, and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Doctors: A Beacon Of Hope
Doctors are often seen as a symbol of life amidst adversity. Their role transcends the mere application of medicine; they stand at the threshold between life and death, earning them the moniker ‘Gods on Earth’ for their dedication and care.
In India, Doctors’ Day is observed with events honouring physicians and healthcare workers. The day also inspires countless students preparing for the NEET UG examination, aspiring to become future MBBS doctors and serve the nation’s healthcare needs.
Who Was Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy?
Born on July 1, 1882, in Bengal (now West Bengal), Dr Roy displayed academic excellence from a young age. He earned a degree in Mathematics from Presidency College, Kolkata, and later pursued medicine at Calcutta Medical College.
His pursuit of excellence led him to St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, where he obtained both the MRCP (Member of the Royal College of Physicians) and the FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons). Despite initial rejection due to his age and financial constraints, Dr Roy’s determination saw him accepted and eventually celebrated as one of the first Indian doctors to hold all three degrees: MBBS, MRCP, and FRCS.
India’s Freedom Movement And National Recognition
Dr Roy also served as a personal physician to several leaders of India’s freedom movement, including Mahatma Gandhi, offering medical care and counsel during turbulent times.
After independence, Dr Roy assumed office as the Chief Minister of West Bengal in 1948. His tenure saw significant advancements in medical education and public healthcare across the state.
In 1961, Dr Roy was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine and public service. His legacy continues through the many medical institutions established in his name.
