The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) fails to comply with directives issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC).
The NLC, in a directive issued on Monday, June 9, ordered GTEC to reinstate allowances for GAUA members that were either reduced or withdrawn, initiate discussions on disparities within the Single Spine Salary Structure, and reverse a recent directive affecting office-holding positions within public universities.
However, GAUA says no meaningful action has been taken to implement the NLC’s instructions. In a statement, the Association warned that it would declare a strike if the government does not act by the end of June.
In a related development, the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has also issued a seven-day ultimatum to GTEC. TEWU-GH is demanding the immediate reversal of a directive requiring traditional public universities to swear in representatives of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) onto their Governing Councils.
