The World Trade Centre Georgetown (WTCG) yesterday hosted a forum aimed at addressing longstanding gaps in Guyana鈥檚 copyright framework, with a renewed focus on strengthening legal protections for local creatives and supporting the growth of the creative economy.
During the session held at the WTCG building on High Street, the session brought together stakeholders from the arts, business, and legal communities. It featured remarks from WTCG Executive Director Wesley Kirton and international lawyer Neville Bissember Jnr., who recently authored a study examining Guyana鈥檚 copyright environment. That study was commissioned following consultations with local and international intellectual property experts and reviews of best practices in other jurisdictions.
鈥淭he purpose of this study was to assess the current state of copyright in Guyana, identify weaknesses, and propose practical reforms that empower creatives to earn from their work,鈥 Bissember said. 鈥淐opyright is essentially the legal right to control how your creative work is used. Without a strong legal foundation, creators are left exposed and undervalued.鈥
