Ex-Catholic priest who held top position in Birmingham admits sex attacks on teen

A former Catholic priest who held a top position in Birmingham has admitted a string of historic abuse. Thomas Millar, 71, had been a spiritual director at St Mary’s College, Oscott, off Chester Road on the Erdington / Sutton Coldfield border, when he left suddenly after nine weeks. He was recalled to the Diocese of Motherwell by his Bishop in 2021. The Glasgow Times reported that Millar preyed on a boy, who was aged in his mid-teens, at a sports centre in Baillieston, Glasgow. It said the boy was also attacked while sleeping at the priest’s parish house as well as other assaults on church property. The victim spoke to his wife about what happened in 2021 before reporting it to police in 2023. Millar, of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, has since resigned in shame from the Catholic Church. He pleaded guilty to repeated indecent assault of the victim between 1981 and 1984 following a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow last week. He was remanded into custody and is due to be sentenced in July. A statement from the Archdiocese of Birmingham issued to BirminghamLive said: “Mr Millar was at St Mary’s College, Oscott as Spiritual Director for nine weeks in 2021. “He was recalled to the Diocese of Motherwell by his Bishop and left immediately.”
