Emma Agius confronts sexual violence through art in bold solo exhibition

Gozitan artist and mental health advocate Emma Agius will unveil her powerful solo exhibition, The Load I Carried, at Tama Office, Strait Street, Valletta, on July 18 at 7pm. The exhibition explores Agius鈥檚 personal experience of sexual violence, using drawing as both artistic expression and therapeutic practice. Through a raw and unflinching visual narrative, Agius maps the emotional terrain of trauma, highlighting the bitter irony of abuse occurring in spaces meant to offer safety. Her work underscores a stark global reality: the continued lack of truly safe spaces for countless women around the world. The exhibition, open to the public on July 19, culminates in a Finissage and Q&A with the artist on July 20 at 6pm. Agius, a multidisciplinary artist from Gozo, is known for her bold explorations of trauma, healing and identity through photography, illustration and immersive installation. Her practice is shaped by her lived experiences as a sexual assault survivor and her ongoing journey with PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder. Her art balances emotional honesty with symbolic sophistication, transforming personal suffering into universal testimony. The Load I Carried is both a deeply personal narrative and a public call for change, challenging audiences to reflect on the realities of violence and the need for spaces that truly foster care and safety. This exhibition contains themes of harassment and trauma. Visitor discretion is advised.
