Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso first met in 2012 when they were just 13 years old
Premier League soccer star Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash in Spain, police said. Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, was also killed in the single-vehicle accident after their car left the road.Just weeks after his wedding, Diogo Jota tragically died in a car crash, plunging the sports fraternity into mourning. He leaves behind a grieving wife Rute Cardoso, and three young children. It was nothing short of a dream come true for Diogo Jota and Rute to tie the knot as the long-time couple got married in an emotional affair on June 22. It was their wedding reel, filled with happy memories, unseen photographs and the promise of forever. “A day we will never forget,” was the caption of the post.Diogo Jota’s wife posted a heartbreaking message of the couple’s recent wedding earlier this week, writing: “Yes to forever.” View this post on Instagram Jota married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22 and his wife posted images from their ceremony on social media earlier this week. The two grew up together in Porto, Portugal, attending the same high school, where their relationship began. From a young age, Rute has supported Jota through every stage of his footballing career, following him across clubs and countries.The couple announced they were expecting their first child in 2020, son Dinis. In March 2023, second baby joined their family and later on, a third little one came in late 2024 or early 2025. After twelve years together鈥攖hrough early highs and lows鈥擱ute and Jota married on June 22, 2025 in an intimate wedding in Porto.But just ten days later, everything came to an end. Jota and his brother died after a car in which they were travelling crashed in Cernadilla, Zamora. Police said the tyre of a Lamborghini blew out while attempting to overtake. He had a contagious joy and was a reference point in his own community.鈥淥n behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation and myself, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and Andre as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the respective clubs of the players.鈥淲e have lost two champions.
