The footballing world is still reeling from the shocking news that Diogo Jota has passed away at the age of 28.
The Liverpool forward and his brother, Andre, both died in a car crash in Northern Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Tributes have poured in from all over the globe, with fans and players united in their grief at the death of two young stars gone way too soon.
For Jota, his death is made even more tragic by the fact that he only got married two weeks ago to Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children.
Here’s what we know about the crash that claimed the life of Jota and his brother:
The crash took place at 12:30am Spanish time (11:30pm Irish time) in the Northern Spanish region of Zamora.
Spanish authorities have stated that the Lamborghini in which Jota and his brother were travelling in veered off the road after a tyre blew out on the car while in the middle of overtaking a second car. It is then believed that the car caught fire. Pictures from the site of the crash in Spain show a burnt-out car on the side of the road.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Zamora said: “The investigation into the crash is being carried out by Civil Guard traffic officers. We believe the car suffered a blowout from the marks on the road. The full police report once it is completed will be submitted to a duty court in Zamora which has launched an ongoing judicial investigation into this crash.
鈥淭hat report is going to take time to complete, probably about four or five days but possibly longer. At this moment in time it is impossible to say at exactly what speed the car was going but that is something the Civil Guard investigators will be able to detail at least approximately in their final report from things like the skid marks. What I can confirm is that no other vehicle was involved and no-one else was hurt.”
Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals. He lifted the Premier League title with the team last season, and won the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022.
