The vehicle was a Lamborghini, and the incident was described as a high-impact crash followed by combustion.
Emergency response teams dispatched to the scene included the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Extinguishing Consortium and a Medical Emergency Unit (UME).
A tyre blowout may have triggered the accident
Preliminary findings suggest that theLamborghini suffered a tyre blowout while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
The accident occurred at around 12:40 a.m. when, for reasons that are being investigated, a car left the road and caught fire , at kilometer 65 of the A-52 towards Benavente.
El Confidencial reports that firefighters extinguished the blaze, which spread to surrounding vegetation, and collaborated with emergency medical services and the Civil Guard.
Medical services on the scene could only confirm the deaths of the two occupants of the vehicle.
As of now, no third-party vehicles appear to have been involved in the collision.
Jota was accompanied by his brother Andr茅 Silva, also confirmed dead at the scene
The second fatality in the crash was Andr茅 Silva, aged 25, younger brother to Diogo Jota and also a professional footballer.
Silva had previously played for FC Penafiel, a club in Portugal鈥檚 second-tier division.
Authorities confirmed both victims were travelling together in the same vehicle and died on impact or shortly thereafter due to the severity of the collision and subsequent fire.
The crash occurred two weeks after Jota鈥檚 wedding in Porto
Public attention intensified due to the timing of the accident, which occurred just two weeks after Jota鈥檚 wedding to his long-time partner and mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso.
The ceremony took place in Porto, Portugal, and was attended by family, friends, and several figures from the football community.
Media interviews published the day prior to the crash included quotes from Jota referencing his recent marriage.
