Communities Minister joins Jamie Bryson's Grand Central Irish signage legal case

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has confirmed that he has intervened in the Judicial Review taken by loyalist activist Jamie Bryson over the decision by the Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins to install Irish language signage at Belfast’s Grand Central Station. Back in May, Mr Justice Scoffield granted Mr Bryson permission for a judicial review on the decision. Under Stormont rules, ministerial decisions that are deemed significant or controversial should be considered collectively by the Executive, rather than by an individual minister. Mr Bryson contends Ms Kimmins should have brought the issue of installing Irish language signs at the new Belfast transport hub to the wider Executive for decision because it was a 鈥渃ontroversial鈥 matter. In a statement issued to Belfast Live , Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, whose remit includes the promotion of the Irish language, said: 鈥淚 am intervening in ongoing Judicial Review proceedings to provide relevant evidence and submissions to the Court to assist decision-making. 鈥淚t is unfortunate that we have reached this point. However, I feel it is important to do my part to ensure that our democratic processes are upheld. 鈥淎s proceedings are ongoing I do not intend to make any further comment.鈥 For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here and sign up to our politics newsletter here.
