Actor and comedian Pete Davidson just shared a bit of his personal life, especially about his complicated relationship with his maternal grandfather. During his set at the North to Shore Festival in Newark, New Jersey, he took the stage and shared his usual dark jokes but also reflected on his family life. He appeared alongside Jon Stewart and John Mulaney at the Prudential Centre on June 27.
“I’m not that close with him,” Pete admitted, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “I’m close with my dad’s dad. I don’t like my mom’s dad,” he added, referring to his mother Amy Davidson’s father. Following this, the 31-year-old comedian opened up about his 81-year-old grandfather’s abusive behaviour towards him when he was a child. He mentioned, “He used to beat the s–t out of me, and I don’t like him very much. He’s old school, he’s very Irish.”
Furthermore, Pete shared that his maternal grandfather is suffering from a chronic lung condition called emphysema, which makes breathing extremely difficult. With his trademark bluntness, he confessed, “I hope he f—-g rots,” before acknowledging the emotional conflict he feels due to the situation. He added, “It’s a tough situation because I want to be there for my mom, but deep down, I’m so stoked about my grandfather’s impending death.”
Despite the challenging time he had been through because of his grandfather’s behaviour, Pete mentioned that he wanted to emotionally support his mother during this time. “I don’t want to be rude to my mom. I think I have the best mom in the world. I’m very, very lucky,” he told the audience. Pete shared that is why he has been making efforts to remember at least one good moment with his maternal grandfather so that he “could hold onto it.”
In comparison, Pete shares a strong bond with his paternal grandfather, Stephen Davidson, to the extent that the latter even made an appearance in The King of Staten Island. It was a semi-autobiographical film about Pete, released in 2020.
In other news, Pete is currently dating model Elsie Hewitt. They are going strong and splitting their time between New York and Brooklyn. Besides this, the comedian also made headlines for removing all his tattoos and checking into a wellness centre for mental health treatment.
