Coimbatore resident gets 7 years RI for attempting to murder brother in 2017

The Third Additional Subordinate Court in Coimbatore on Monday sentenced a man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for attempting to murder his younger brother in 2017.

Judge P.K. Dhamayanthi awarded the punishment to C. Muthukumar, 50, of Mesthiri Marappan Street at Rathinapuri for attempting to murder his brother C. Ganesan, a resident of Subbathal Street at Thayir Itteri Road.

As per the prosecution case, the siblings had been working under their father Chidambaram, who ran a restaurant in a building belonging to one Saravanan on 100 Feet Road three decades ago. Chidambaram entrusted the restaurant to Mr. Ganesan around 15 years ago and helped Muthukumar open a separate restaurant in a rented space at Sivananda Colony. After Mr. Saravanan sold the building on 100 Feet Road to one Usen Basha, the latter offered ₹70 lakh to Mr. Ganesan and other shopkeepers to vacate their rented spaces. Out of the total settlement amount, Mr. Ganesan received ₹50 lakh.

According to the police, Muthukumar demanded a share of the sum from Mr. Ganesan, who allegedly refused to oblige. Due to the enmity, Muthukumar went to Ganesan’s house on the night of November 9, 2017 and assaulted him with a machete. Mr. Ganesan suffered multiple cuts and was hospitalised. The Rathinapuri police arrested Muthukumar based on a complaint lodged by Mr. Ganesan’s wife.

The court pronounced the judgement in the case on Monday and slapped a fine of ₹5,000 on Muthukumar, besides awarding him seven years of RI.
