The Bharathidasan University Retired Faculties Association (BURFA) has urged the authorities to take immediate steps to get re-accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council as it would have a bearing on the future of the university鈥檚 students.
In an official release, BURFA president M. Selvam citing the minutes of the general body meeting held on June 26, said: 鈥淚t is shocking that the BDU has failed to get accreditation for more than a year. Necessary steps should be taken by the Vice-Chancellor Committee to get it immediately. It is suggested that retired professors with exposure to NAAC and peer-team visits may be used by BDU.鈥
Lack of accreditation would stop BDU from offering correspondence courses through its Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) from February 2026, said the statement. 鈥淲ithout the revenue from CDOE, BDU cannot survive on self-supporting basis,鈥 it said.
Pointing out that 57 teachers had retired from 2015 onwards and no new recruitment had been made since 2012, the association鈥檚 statement said the services of BDU鈥檚 senior teachers (including retired faculty) may be used to fill in the vacancies.
The body asked for a quick disbursal of pension and retirement benefits of teachers that had been held up due to objections raised by the Local Fund Audit department. It urged the authorities to establish a coordinating centre for visiting and emeritus professors in order to promote research publication in top indexed journals and funded research projects in BDU.
The meeting suggested immediate suspension of the proposal to transfer experienced staff and funds from BDU to the proposed Kalaignar University as the former was facing a funds crunch and staff shortage.
