A boozed-up Renfrew woman assaulted two cops after they turned up at her house in the early hours of the morning asking her to turn the music down. Margaret McDonald was blasting tunes around 2am on December 30 last year which resulted in a member of the public making a noise complaint. When police arrived at the 54-year-old鈥檚 Nethergreen Crescent home, they couldn鈥檛 hear any music but stayed for a few moments to ensure it was off. The officers heard music from the property at 2.40am then, when they finally got McDonald鈥檚 attention, she assaulted PC Aitken by grabbing his body armour. McDonald was arrested and taken to Saltcoats police station in North Ayrshire where she kicked PC Robertson鈥檚 shin while at the charge bar, claiming her 鈥渉andcuffs were too tight.鈥 Procurator fiscal depute Karen Yuill told Paisley Sheriff Court yesterday: 鈥淥fficers heard music coming from the upper windows of the property and remained to try and get the attention of someone within. 鈥淭he accused presented herself at the window and officers advised why they were there. McDonald came to the front door, appeared to be hostile and, when PC Aitken moved towards her, she seized hold of his body armour. 鈥淧C Aitken and PC Robertson then took hold of the accused and placed her within the rear cell of a marked police van. 鈥淪he was taken to Saltcoats custody office and, around 4.10am at the charge bar, she kicked out with her right leg towards PC Robertson and made contact with his left shin. 鈥淪he was placed in a cell and later released, being advised a report would be submitted.鈥 McDonald admitted assaulting the two police officers while they were on duty. Defence agent Eliott Gemmell told the court McDonald lives alone and 鈥渞arely leaves the house鈥. He added: 鈥淪he is mortified and deeply ashamed. She knows the officers were there only doing their job, that they were there to ask her to turn her music down. She accepts she was intoxicated and playing music too loud. 鈥淪he seized one officer鈥檚 armour and knows fine well she shouldn鈥檛 have behaved in this way. 鈥淚n relation to the other assault, her position is her handcuffs were too tight and her protest at this was falling on deaf ears and so she has acted in this manner out of frustration. She is deeply ashamed and in a position to pay a fine.鈥 Sheriff Clare Arias questioned Mr Gemmell on McDonald鈥檚 views on unpaid work. After speaking with his client in the dock, he stated: 鈥淭here is nothing physically that would prevent her from carrying out unpaid work but she suffers mental health difficulties. She could also pay compensation to the officers.鈥 Sheriff Clare Arias adjourned sentence for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment. But she warned: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think a fine is appropriate for an assault on two police officers, even if it is an isolated incident.鈥 McDonald will return to court on July 24 for sentencing.
