The summer of 2025 will be remembered for heralding back the era of theatrical releases. Since the COVID pandemic, the audiences have become selective in terms of which kind of movies they want to watch on the big screen. Since 2022, mostly big-scale action spectacles such as Pathaan, Jawan, Gadar 2, Animal, and Pushpa 2 have managed to catch the fancy of the masses. Until 2025 came in with a much-needed change. This year, so far, has seen mid-budget movies do well at the box office. It started with Sunny Deol’s Jaat, followed by Akshay Kumar’s Kesari 2 and Rajkummar Rao’s Bhool Chuk Maaf. Then came the big-ticket Housefull 5, feel-good Sitaare Zameen Par, horror-thriller Maa, and now Metro… In Dino. All of these movies did attract viewers to theatres, signaling that audiences are gradually coming back into the habit of watching films in theatres. A major factor that has contributed in this major change is the regular flow of releases with known names. The summer, in particular, has seen a plethora of releases from both Bollywood and Hollywood, igniting a mini battle of sorts. So far, there have been several big-ticket Hollywood releases such as Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, F1: The Movie, and Jurassic World Rebirth. All of them have done decent to good business in India, giving stiff competition to Bollywood releases like Sitaare Zameen Par, Maa, and Metro… In Dino.
