Organising fun activities at work has become a trend in modern-day office culture. While it might be a way to boost morale and increase employee engagement, the Internet thinks otherwise. Case in point, a Redditor’s post, that shared a clip featuring a bunch of employees, enthusiastically participating in an office activity on the platform. Cheerful, they danced to the popular song Janu Meri Jaan from the 1980s movie Shaan, capturing the attention of the online community.
The text in the video read, “Swarg Lok”. In a note attached to the post, the Redditor wrote, “I hate corporate employee wellness bull**** like this. Just give me some extra money and an extra leave to destress. Thanks.”
I absolutely hate corporate employee wellness bullshit like this. Just give me some extra money and an extra leave to destress. Thanks by inIndianWorkplace
Within no time, the intriguing video went viral among social media users who were quick enough to share their responses. In a surprising reaction, most of them disapproved of the idea of engaging employees via such activities. Instead, they demanded extra payment and a day off to spend some relaxing time.
A user preferred working from home on such days, writing, “WFH on such days.” A comment read, “Another reason not to join corporate.”
One of the Redditors had a better idea as he suggested, “Just give us the goddamn money that we deserve. Money will save us in this economy not twerking with snake-like colleagues!”
“Introvert’s worst nightmare,” said another, reacting to the post. Jokingly, one of the Redditors advised, “HR should be the first department to be handed over to AI.”
A user also had an interesting take on the video. The event appeared to be a strategically planned move as he pointed at the number of people vs the number of computer stations.
“Looking at the number of people vs the number of computer stations, I would wager this is entirely staged, extras brought in to play ’employees’ so this business can try to drum up clients,” he wrote.
Talking about the song Janu Meri Jaan, it was composed by RD Burman and sung by Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. The movie featured Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami in the lead roles.
