Chris Harrington, managing director at hoppa, has issued four pieces of advice if travellers and holidaymakers find themselves in such a situation. Chris said: “If you discover that your flight has been cancelled, the first port of call is to contact the airline your flight is booked with. “If you are already at the airport , head for the airline鈥檚 customer service desk to speak to a member of staff. “However, other people will be in the same position as you, so if you鈥檙e met with long queues, try using the airline鈥檚 app if they have one or ring the customer service team to find out about the next steps.” Chris continued: “If your flight has been cancelled, in most cases, the airline will have to make an alternative plan for you. “When you manage to speak to a member of staff, see if they can rebook you on a later flight. “You may also want to consider opting for an alternative route or flying to another airport close to your final destination. “It鈥檚 important to understand that the airline can book you a flight through a different provider, so make them aware of this.” Chris continued: “It鈥檚 vital that when you book a trip abroad, you purchase travel insurance to protect yourself from circumstances such as cancelled flights. “If your flight has been cancelled, check your travel insurance documents as some policies will cover the cost of hotels, airport transfers, alternative flights and food. “It鈥檚 also worthwhile enquiring with your airline about vouchers for cancelled flights, as many offer them for passengers to find accommodation and cover the cost of food.” Chris said: “If the flight cancellation is due to the actions of the airline, then it鈥檚 likely you鈥檒l be entitled to compensation. “As stated by ABTA, if an airline cancels your flight in less than 14 days before you鈥檙e due to depart, then you鈥檒l be entitled to compensation based on the length of your journey. “For example, for all flights of 1,500km or less, which is similar to a flight from Glasgow to Amsterdam, you could be able to claim 拢220 in compensation. “For long-haul flights, such as those from London Heathrow to JFK Airport in New York, passengers can claim compensation up to 拢520.” He added: “Millions of flights operate worldwide every year, with only a small number being cancelled. “In most cases, people will enjoy their holidays with little disruption, however, it鈥檚 important to be prepared and aware of the steps to take if you experience a cancelled flight.”
