BC Wildfire Service says three-hectare grassfire near Peterson Creek now being held (Kamloops)

UPDATE: 7:45 p.m.

The BC Wildfire Service has classified the Peterson Creek-area grassfire as being held.

According to BCWS, this means the fire is projected 鈥 based on current fuel and weather conditions 鈥 to remain within its current perimeter.

BCWS has estimated the grassfire to be a little more than three hectares in size.

It鈥檚 suspected the fire was caused by human activity.

UPDATE: 7:16 p.m.

Kamloops Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc says crews are 鈥済etting a good handle鈥 on a grassfire that started Thursday evening in the lower Peterson Creek area.

The fire started at about 5:30 p.m. west of Glenfair Drive.

Uzeloc said firefighters are set up below the grassfire to attack it, while other crews are setting up defence around homes in case the starts to pick up.

鈥淏CWS has two initial attack crews en route to assist and a helicopter to get an overhead look and drop water if needed,鈥 Uzeloc said.

Community Services Officers are stationed near the Kamloops Law Courts and appear to be blocking traffic from accessing streets around the building.

The City of Kamloops is urging residents to avoid the lower Peterson Creek area and trails while firefighters are working.

The BC Wildfire Service has sent in a ground crew to assist Kamloops firefighters as they battle a grassfire in the lower Peterson Creek area.

The fire started at about 5:30 p.m. west of Glenfair Drive, in the hills above the Xget鈥檛em鈥 Trail.

鈥淏ecause the incident is occurring within the City of Kamloops limits, the incident does belong to Kamloops Fire Rescue,鈥 said Taylor Schantz, BCWS fire information officer.

鈥淒ue to the interface nature of the fire, they did request BC Wildfire support, so we are sending a crew out there to provide that support in the grassland area.鈥

In a social media post, the City of Kamloops urged residents to avoid the lower Peterson Creek area and the trails while firefighters are on scene.

Smoke from the grassfire is highly visible over downtown Kamloops.

A grassfire west of Glenfair Drive in downtown Kamloops is pumping smoke into the sky above the city.

The fire, which is located in the hills above the Xget鈥檛em鈥 Trail, was discovered just after 5:30 p.m.

Flames can be seen licking at trees dotting the hillside and spreading through the dry grass.

Kamloops Fire Rescue has sent crews to action the fire.
