Malaysian Bar president Ezri Abdul Wahab said it is concerned about claims that the JAC questioned a judge over alleged interference in judicial matters.PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar will apply for the release of minutes from the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting held on May 16, following media reports that a senior judge was questioned over alleged interference in judicial affairs.Bar president Ezri Abdul Wahab said the proposed court action is in the interest of public accountability and transparency.鈥淭his is necessary to ascertain the facts, to preserve institutional integrity, and to ensure that any necessary corrective steps can be taken without compromising the law,鈥 he said in a statement today.FMT had reported that a senior judge was summoned by the JAC to answer allegations of interference in judicial appointments, dating back to last year.A source claimed the matter led to a heated discussion during the JAC鈥檚 monthly meeting last month, with members now split into two camps.Ezri said the Malaysian Bar was deeply concerned by the media report which, if accurate, raised serious questions about the integrity and independence of the judiciary.鈥淭he Malaysian Bar is of the view that allegations of judicial interference go beyond the confines of a mere disciplinary matter. They strike at the heart of public confidence in the administration of justice,鈥 he said.鈥淭he issue here is not only about propriety, but also about the structural health and independence of our judiciary.鈥滺e also said judicial independence was non-negotiable and must be protected under all circumstances.鈥淚t is a constitutional guarantee and a pillar of our democratic framework. Any conduct 鈥 actual or perceived 鈥 that undermines this principle must be addressed swiftly and with full transparency.鈥淚f the report is found to be untrue, that too must be clarified with equal urgency to avoid unwarranted damage to the reputation of our judiciary,鈥 he said.He urged all institutions involved to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves, and reaffirmed the Bar鈥檚 commitment to the rule of law and judicial independence.
