Authorities Plan Pre-Registration System For Tourists Visiting Mussoorie in Peak Season

To manage the unmanageable crowd and bottleneck traffic situation during peak travel season in Mussoorie, the Dehradun administration is mulling over to implement a pre-registration system. As per a report by Times of India, after this system is launched, travellers who fail to register would not be allowed to enter the hill station from the checkpoints. The step is being taken after considering the massive footfall that doubled between 2022 and 2024.
An official was cited by TOI as saying that the pre-registration system is only for the peak season to tackle to long traffic jams. Cameras will be installed at three entry points- Kempty Fall and Kuthal gate.
The tourism department officials held a meeting on Friday to discuss the implementation of this system. The pre-registration would be done through details like contact number, vehicle detail, number of travellers and more. The registration will be OTP based which will be sent to the registered mobile number.
After the registration is complete, a QR code would be generated and vehicles entering Mussoorie will have to show the QR code to enter. The vehicles will be screened through Automated Number Plate Recognition systems, and tourists without a valid QR code would not be allowed to enter.
Reportedly, over 21 lakh tourists visited Mussoorie in 2024 and during the peak season news of massive traffic congestion becomes common. Travellers visit the ‘queen of hills’ during summer and winter holidays, and on long weekends. Several videos go viral on social media platforms showing the long queue of vehicals waiting to enter the town.
A tourist from Delhi died in June this year after being stuck in traffic and failing to reach hospital care.
