The Prefontaine Classic 100m meeting record may go down on Saturday as world leader Kishane Thompson will challenge the 9.80s set by Steve Mullings.
Jamaican 100m champion Kishane Thompson has positive thoughts on breaking the Prefontaine Classic 100m meet record on Saturday, July 5.
Thompson, who headlines the stacked men’s 100m alongside Trayvon Bromell, being the fastest in the field this season, believes it’s possible to go Steve Mullings’ meet record of 9.80s.
“Anything is possible. I just got to come out there, execute, do my best, and enjoy myself,” said the Olympic silver medallist during the press conference of the Eugene Diamond League.
The highly anticipated meet will feature a galaxy of the world’s best athletes, including Olympic champions and medallists from Paris.
In the men’s 100m, Thompson is highly tipped to claim the famous win, after his exceptional performance at the Jamaican trials last weekend, where he effortlessly clocked a personal best of 9.75s to successfully defend his national title.
Despite his time, the 23-year-old won’t have an easy walk to the win as he’ll face a major threat in former world indoor champion Bromell, who’s back to his best form since 2022 and is unbeaten this season with a season’s best of 9.84s.
Also included in the loaded field is former world champion Christian Coleman, aiming to prove he’s still a force in the men’s sprint division and will be gunning to return to winning ways.
Likewise, the star-studded list has underdogs capable of springing a surprise on their good day.
They include third-place finisher at the Jamaican trials Ackeem Blake (9.88s), Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, reigning world indoor champion Jeremiah Azu, Australia’s rising star Kennedy Lachlan, South African youngster Bayanda Walaza, and USA’s Brandon Hicklin.
