Another life lost at sea: Woman dies in La Manga

Two Dead and One Hospitalised After Beach Incidents in Murcia Region so far this week

A 77-year-old woman died on Thursday morning, June 26, while swimming at Cavanna beach in La Manga. She was pulled from the sea unconscious by instructors from a nearby sailing school. Lifeguards from Cartagena’s Civil Protection service carried out resuscitation efforts, but sadly, she could not be revived.

Other recent incidents along the coast

This was not the only emergency at the beach this week. On Sunday, June 22, an 85-year-old man also died after entering the water at La Mota beach in San Pedro del Pinatar. He had reportedly swallowed a large amount of water and was found unconscious. Emergency services attempted CPR but were unable to save him.

Then, on Monday, June 23, an 87-year-old man was rescued from the sea at Los Narejos beach in Los Alcázares. He was found unconscious, stabilised at the scene, and taken to Los Arcos del Mar Menor Hospital in San Javier.

Circumstances still unclear

In each of these cases, it is not yet fully known what led to the incidents. The victims were all older adults, and it remains unclear whether pre-existing health conditions, heat-related stress, or other factors may have played a role. What is clear, however, is that these incidents are a sad reminder to take extra care during the current heatwave.

Safety tips for swimming during hot weather

With high temperatures across the region, emergency services are encouraging people to be cautious at the beach. Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:

Swim early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Avoid swimming alone — always go into the sea with someone else.

Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol before swimming.

Rest often in the shade and wear a hat and sunscreen.

If you notice someone in difficulty in the water, call 112 immediately.

A reminder to take extra care this summer

As the region continues to deal with extreme heat, it’s important for everyone, especially older adults, kids and those with health conditions, to take extra precautions at the beach or pool etc. While we may never know the full details behind each case, being aware and taking simple steps can help reduce risks.
