(File pic)PETALING JAYA: Amnesty International Malaysia has joined a civil society group in launching an online petition advocating justice for Teoh Beng Hock, who was found dead in 2009 after being questioned by graft busters. The petition was launched on Amnesty鈥檚 website in partnership with the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement. It urged the authorities to take 鈥渋mmediate, transparent and meaningful action鈥 to serve justice for the former political aide. This comes after the Attorney鈥慓eneral鈥檚 Chambers (AGC) classified a fresh probe into Teoh鈥檚 death as requiring no further action (NFA) due to insufficient evidence to bring charges.鈥淥ver this 11-year span, despite multiple efforts by civil society and Teoh鈥檚 family to call for a proper investigation of the case and a court finding of criminal wrongdoing, no one has been held accountable, and the officers implicated were never charged.鈥淢ore than a decade later, justice remains elusive for Teoh and his family,鈥 the organisations said in a statement.Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009, after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor. He had earlier been questioned for several hours by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers at the Selangor MACC headquarters. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up to look into Teoh鈥檚 death 鈥 one in 2011 and the other in 2015 鈥 but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement.A re-investigation was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year, directing the police to re-examine all aspects of the case. This was also classified as NFA.
