Amazon shoppers told food supplement 'contains antibiotic resistant' bacteria

The UK’s Food Standards Agency has issued a warning to Amazon shoppers about a diet supplement recall. It has been sold through Amazon and also the manufacturer Orgenism’s website, the FSA said today in a new update. The product in question is Orgenism’s Eggshell Membrane Capsules, which have been found to contain Salmonella. This bacterium can cause symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. According to the Food Standards Agency, “Orgenism is recalling Eggshell Membrane Capsules sold on Amazon because Salmonella has been found in the product. Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.” In an update it added: “This update is to make consumers aware that the Salmonella found in this product has been linked to human illness after consumption of the product. The Salmonella found is resistant to several antibiotics, therefore particular disposal routes are required.” The FSA s aid: “The Salmonella found produces extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), and is resistant to several antibiotics, (fluoroquinolones, tetracycline and Fosfomycin), making it more difficult to treat. Inaccurate disposal of the product could cause wider public health, animal health or environmental risks therefore it is important to ensure you follow the advice on how to safely dispose of the product provided below. “Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. “Public Health Authorities advise if you have consumed this product and have any concerns, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals, using the most appropriate route depending on where you live, (i.e., visit your GP, call NHS111). Even if you feel well, return of the product is essential so that it can be disposed of in a way that does not contaminate the environment and put others at risk. Do not dispose of this product in household waste or flush the capsules down toilets.” If you have bought the above product do not eat it and do not dispose of it in household waste nor flush the capsules down the toilet.
