Actor Akshay Oberoi is revisiting an old passion — not for a role, but for a ritual. These days, when he’s not in front of the camera, he’s often found on the basketball court, coaching his young son Avyaan. It’s not about grooming a future athlete or pushing an agenda — for Akshay, it’s simply about sharing something that meant a lot to him growing up.
Having spent his childhood in the US, Akshay played basketball regularly through school. The sport stuck with him — not just as a game, but as a space for friendship, focus, and fun. Now based in India, he’s slowly introducing that world to Avyaan, not with drills or pressure, but with patience and a quiet hope that his son will enjoy it too.
“Basketball has always been a part of my life. I used to play regularly with my classmates back in the US, and those memories have stayed with me,” Akshay says. “Now, seeing Avyaan take to the game with such energy and enthusiasm brings me joy. When we play together, it’s more than just sport — it’s a way for us to connect.”
Their games aren’t structured or serious. It’s often just the two of them shooting hoops, running around, and laughing. Akshay admits that in a cricket-obsessed country like India, basketball isn’t the obvious choice. But that’s exactly why he feels it’s worth exploring — to show that other sports can find their space too.
He also hopes it encourages other parents to step outside the usual routines and try something different with their kids — whether it’s basketball or anything else. “Playing together teaches you a lot, without really trying to. It’s not about being the best, it’s about spending time.”
On the professional front, Akshay Oberoi is busier than ever. He’s currently filming Toxic, a pan-India action thriller led by superstar Yash and directed by Geethu Mohandas. The film also features Nayanthara and Kiara Advani in prominent roles and is reportedly set against the backdrop of Goa’s drug trade.
Additionally, Akshay Oberoi will be seen in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, slated for release on September 12. Directed by Shashank Khaitan, the romantic comedy stars Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles, with Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf playing key characters. The film is backed by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Shashank Khaitan.
That’s not all — Akshay Oberoi has also teamed up with Manoj Bajpayee and Saqib Saleem for an intense crime drama. The project began filming last month, with the trio spotted shooting in Bhopal. Up next, they’re expected to travel across different parts of India for the shoot. While excitement is building, further details about the film remain under wraps for now.
