A comedian鈥檚 guide to Ko拧ice, the city that is better than you think

Explore Ko拧ice with the Spectacular Slovakia travel guide.

Ever wondered what makes Ko拧ice, Slovakia鈥檚 second city, tick? Tucked away in the country鈥檚 far east, it is often overlooked by travellers 鈥 but to their own detriment. Ko拧ice is a delightful blend of eastern Slovakia鈥檚 small-town charm and a touch of metropolitan flair. Here, fine dining sits comfortably alongside traditional fare. Culturally, too, the city holds its own, offering everything from comedy and theatre to punk rock 鈥 more than earning its place among Europe鈥檚 mid-sized cities.

Comedian Diana Renner, a Ko拧ice native, appeared on Spectacular Slovakia, a podcast by The Slovak Spectator, to share her take on the city.

From midnight pizza to tomato beer

From the elegant Hlavn谩 ulica (Main Street), lined with caf茅s, shops and the National Theatre, to smoky late-night bars, Renner, a performer with the popular comedy troupe Siln茅 Re膷i, paints Ko拧ice as a city both accessible and surprising. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so alive in summer, you can people-watch all day,鈥 she says, recalling long afternoons spent on the city鈥檚 pedestrianised thoroughfare. Nearby, the imposing St Elizabeth鈥檚 Cathedral 鈥 the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe 鈥 anchors the skyline.

Yet Renner鈥檚 affection lies just as much in the city鈥檚 underground. She recalls ducking into Colosseum, a punk bar hidden behind an unassuming door on Dominik谩nske n谩mestie (square). 鈥淵ou鈥檇 never think it goes anywhere, but inside it鈥檚 huge. Rock concerts, cheap beer, and you can still smoke,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 even need to tell my friends I was in town. I鈥檇 just go to Colosseum, and everyone was there.鈥

Other cultural venues such as Taba膷ka Kulturfabrik 鈥 known for its eclectic concerts and comedy nights 鈥 and the cinema-turned-club 脷smev (Smile) round out her picks. For food, Renner recommends P谩n Ryba (Mr Fish) on Mlynsk谩 Street for its seafood and tripe soup, and Brewery Hostinec 鈥 the oldest restaurant in Slovakia 鈥 for craft brews, including a tomato beer she cheerfully compares to 鈥渇izzy gazpacho鈥.

Late-night hunger? Head to The Beer House, where she and her father still order pizza at midnight. Childhood memories of dancing by the singing fountain on Hlavn谩 ulica resurface 鈥 even if 鈥渋t鈥檚 never in rhythm with the music,鈥 she jokes.

Day trips from Ko拧ice

Renner also shares ideas for day trips just beyond the city. She recommends the Ru啪铆n dam 鈥 20 minutes by car 鈥 for boating and lakeside meals at her mother鈥檚 restaurant, Bradan. Bukovec, a village near Ko拧ice, offers forest walks and swimming, while a hike to Sivec (781 m) rewards climbers with sweeping views at sunset. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about an hour and a half up,鈥 she says. 鈥淎 bit steep, but doable.鈥 Another worthwhile hike is to Folkmarsk谩 Skala, which rises to 915 metres.

A former haunt from her school days also gets a mention: the Mikul谩拧ova v盲znica torture and prison museum. 鈥淚 used to be scared to go there, but now I know it鈥檚 just fake. Though, I guess it used to not be fake,鈥 she muses.

What sets Ko拧ice apart, she believes, is its walkability. 鈥淚t鈥檚 smaller than Bratislava, so you can walk everywhere. And there鈥檚 less traffic.鈥 That ease of access, combined with its layered character 鈥 historic yet offbeat 鈥 gives the city a distinctive rhythm.

Getting there

Reaching Ko拧ice is simpler than it may seem. Renner recommends taking the train above all: a five-hour journey from Bratislava that winds past the High Tatras and Liptovsk媒 Mikul谩拧. First-class tickets cost around 鈧25, and trains run hourly from early morning until early evening. The station is a short walk from the city centre.

Within Ko拧ice, public transport can be less reliable for newcomers. 鈥淕oogle Maps doesn鈥檛 know Ko拧ice鈥檚 trams and trolleybuses,鈥 Renner warns, urging visitors to consult printed timetables at stops. Driving from Bratislava via southern Slovakia takes about five hours, while flights from Vienna to Ko拧ice though shorter in the air – can be less convenient overall. 鈥淭here鈥檚 far less stress when taking the train,鈥 she says.

Buses from the main station connect to out-of-town spots like Bukovec and Ru啪铆n, but timetables should be checked in advance. Carpooling apps such as BlaBlaCar are widely used and offer a more scenic journey through Slovakia鈥檚 varied landscapes.
