Actor Dipika Chikhlia, who immortalised the role of Sita in Ramanand Sagar鈥檚 legendary Ramayan (1987), revealed she was not approached to be part of Nitesh Tiwari鈥檚 upcoming adaptation of the epic.
鈥淚 was never approached. I guess they鈥檝e not even bothered to speak to me about it,鈥 she told Times of India.
The announcement that Arun Govil 鈥 who famously played Ram in the iconic TV series 鈥 will now portray King Dasharath in Tiwari鈥檚 Ramayana caught fans by surprise. Dipika, too, admitted that seeing Govil in a different role within the same mythology feels unfamiliar.
鈥淚 have seen him as Ram and I鈥檝e seen myself as Sita. For me to see him as Dasarath is really a little out of context,鈥 she said.
While she acknowledged that the choice was personal, Dipika believes that certain roles create unbreakable associations in the minds of audiences. 鈥淚 mean, if you played Ram, then you are Ram,鈥 she added.
Even if the team had reached out, the actor shared that she wouldn鈥檛 have accepted any other character in the new adaptation. For Dipika, Sita is the only role she can envision herself playing in the Ramayana narrative. 鈥淥nce I played Sita, I don鈥檛 think I can play any other character in Ramayan,鈥 she explained.
That said, Dipika is open to exploring mythological roles in other epics. She said that while she wouldn鈥檛 take up anything in Ramayana again, she鈥檇 consider acting in stories like Mahabharat or Shiv Puran if offered the right part.
