Superman director James Gunn 鈥 who was fired by Disney after a decade鈥檚 worth of tweets he wrote about child rape, Mexicans, AIDS, and the Holocaust went viral; who said 鈥淭rump wakes up every morning hoping more kids are murdered by immigrants so it will help him in the polls;鈥 who called Sen. Ted Cruz a 鈥渢raitor;鈥 who peddled the Trump 鈥減ee tape鈥 hoax, and who said in 2023 鈥渢here is such a thing as superhero fatigue,鈥 is now telling a large segment of America that his new superhero movie might not be for them.
In an interview with the U.K. Times of London, Gunn said his newest iteration of the Superman film is 鈥減ro-immigrant鈥 and 鈥渒indness鈥 and 鈥渟crew them鈥 to anyone who doesn鈥檛 like that.
The director says that the tale of Superman is 鈥渢he story of America鈥 because, as an alien from outer space, Kal El is an 鈥渋mmigrant.鈥
鈥淎n immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost,鈥 Gunn explained.
He also admitted that one segment of the movie where Lois Lane interviews Clark Kent is all about politics.
鈥淵es, it鈥檚 about politics,鈥 he said of the scene. 鈥淏ut on another level, it鈥檚 about morality. Do you never kill no matter what 鈥 which is what Superman believes 鈥 or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It鈥檚 really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart.鈥
Gunn also said that he knows he鈥檒l be faced with some criticism, 鈥淏ut screw them,鈥 he said.
鈥淏ut it鈥檚 about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.鈥
Gunn鈥檚 comments are not the first to come from someone connected with the new DC film. Last week, the man who portrays the Man of Steel, actor David Corenswet, found himself unable to relay Superman鈥檚 slogan, and replaced 鈥淭he American way鈥 part of the saying with 鈥渁nd good things.鈥
indeed, the character has long been associated with the slogan 鈥渇ighting for truth, justice, and the American way,鈥 but last week, Corenswet blurted out a different version of the motto, saying instead, 鈥渢ruth and justice and all those good things.鈥
Gunn鈥檚 鈥渟crew you鈥 attitude is reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger鈥檚 hateful comment during the COVID pandemic, where he insisted that everyone should be forcibly vaccinated and forced to wear medical masks, and for those who disagree, he yelped, 鈥淪crew your freedom.鈥
