Kajol recently discussed the significant age gap between male and female actors in films. She said that older male actors have often been paired with actresses almost 30 years younger than them, and this practice continues largely because it has gone unchallenged for decades. Kajol talked about the commercial nature of the industry, and said that eventually filmmaking is a business, and people only make what they think will sell.
Kajol On Age Gap Between Male And Female Actors
In an interview with The Lallantop, Kajol was asked about the huge age difference commonly seen between male and female actors in movies. She mentioned that this kind of discrimination has been accepted for a long time, and said that Rajinikanth and many other heroes have worked with actresses 30 years younger to them. “I feel this kind of discrimination has been acceptable for so long. Take Rajni sir, for example, or any of the heroes—there isn’t a single actor who hasn’t worked with heroines 30 years younger than them, even when they’re in their 40s or older. It’s just been happening for so long that no one has really questioned it. No one has asked: why is this happening? Should this still be happening? What message are we sending out?” she said.
Kajol added that filmmakers prioritize creating a setup they believe audiences will like, which means choosing actors who are considered ‘marketable’ or likely to attract viewers. She reiterated that filmmaking is a business driven by what the makers think will work, even if it means casting older male actors opposite much younger actresses.
“I don’t think anybody is thinking that much. What we are thinking about is ki hum picture banana chahte hain. What will make a good setup, we need the correct, saleable people to go with it. I keep coming back to it- that filmmaking is a business. Aap wahi banaoge jo aapko lagta hai bikega. (You will make only what you think will sell).”
Meanwhile, on the work front, Kajol was recently in the mythological horror film ‘Maa’ directed by Vishal Furia.
