Governor nominates former GEDA administrator Melanie Mendiola to serve on GMH board

Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero nominated former Guam Economic Development Authority Administrator and Chief Executive Officer Melanie Mendiola to serve on the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority board of trustees.

The six-year appointment to the GMH board requires legislative approval.

Mendiola as GEDA administrator helped plan for a new GMH to be built in Mangilao.

In her last day on the job during a GEDA board meeting in March, Mendiola said she’s proud of the medical campus project which she said encountered opposition but the project is moving forward, including utility work.

“Appointing you to this position comes with great responsibility because you will have a vital role to perform, placing many demands on your time and energy,” the governor said in her June 25 letter appointing Mendiola to the GMH board. “Integrity and honesty are virtues that I prioritize for my Administration to exemplify, and I know that you will do the same while in service to the people of Guam. Your responsibilities shall be significant and consequential.”

Mendiola resigned as GEDA administrator in March after six years on the job. She led the agency during the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted several millions in federal aid to Guam’s businesses to help keep the economy float.

After leaving GEDA, Mendiola moved back to the private sector, serving as director of investor education and guidance at BG Investment Services starting in April.
