The term itself and its meaning may sound ancient and even problematic, but unfortunately, ‘moral policing’ is quite a common practice till date. It is especially not so rare in India and some of its cities, where women, bachelors and young couples mostly find themselves the target of the same. Something similar happened with these women as well, who allegedly shifted to a newly rented Gandhinagar apartment, just before the start of their college. Taking to social media, a woman narrated a rather frustrating incident that her sister and her other two college friends faced. As per the post, as the students were about to shift, a neighbouring ‘uncle’ came forward complaining- allegedly about renting out the flat to ‘bachelor/etts’. Despite the owner being ‘fine’ with the entire matter, the society’s ‘builder’ allegedly did not let the group move into the flat. As per the post, the group ended up in major trouble as the cost of shifting their belongings fell on them. Moreover, the students were back to square one– searching for a new apartment before the college finally opened. The post went viral in an instant, leaving many reacting in a triggered manner. Times Now could not confirm the authenticity of the post. “My sister got kicked out of her apartment for being single,” the post read. “My sister is a college student in Gujarat. She recently rented a 3BHK apartment in Gandhinagar along with two other girls. They paid brokerage and moved their belongings into the flat. She was waiting for the other 2 girls to arrive to sign the rent agreement. They had asked the broker beforehand that there won’t be an issue because we realise that people don’t want to rent to bachelor/etts and he said no problem. He will manage. But before they could start living there, a neighbour uncle went to the builder and objected to renting the flat to single girls. The builder put the flat ‘on notice’, refusing to let them stay even though the landlord was okay with it,” the post further read. “My sister tried contacting the neighbour uncle to explain that they won’t cause any nuisance. She introduced herself and started talking when the guy just hung up on her. Then he blocked her everywhere. This is not just disappointing, it’s discriminatory. Now all the moving costs are on us and we have to do it a second time and also have to find a new place just before college starts. Why should young adults, be it students or working, be denied a place to live after everything is finalized just because of outdated societal biases?” the post concluded.
