Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to carry out feasibility studies for two new road links aimed at easing traffic congestion in Central Delhi and NDMC areas. As per the minutes of a high-level meeting chaired by Gadkari on June 4 鈥 attended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta 鈥 the proposed links include a tunnel or elevated stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to the planned INA鈥揘elson Mandela Marg elevated corridor, and a second tunnel from either Gyarah Murti or Talkatora Stadium to the same route. Gadkari instructed that these new links be 鈥渋ncorporated鈥 into the bids for the elevated corridor project from INA to Mahipalpur via Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj. NHAI, which had earlier invited bids for consultancy services for the INA鈥揘elson Mandela Marg link, has already received proposals for preparing a detailed project report (DPR). An official said, 鈥淲e can incorporate the provision of carrying out the feasibility studies鈥 for the two proposed links in the same. A comprehensive detailed report would be more helpful for better management of traffic.鈥滾ive Events The Delhi鈥揗eerut and Delhi鈥揇ehradun expressways currently terminate near Sarai Kale Khan. The DND鈥揝ohna spur of the Delhi鈥揗umbai Expressway is expected to open by the end of this year. According to the meeting minutes, Gadkari 鈥渆xpressed concerns鈥 that the completion of these corridors would result in more traffic flow through already congested NDMC and Central Delhi areas, particularly along Ring Road. A technical study for a tunnel from Gyarah Murti to the INA鈥揘elson Mandela Marg corridor had earlier been reported. The Chief Minister鈥檚 Office had also stated that a feasibility study would be undertaken for a tunnel connecting Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport.(With inputs from ToI)(You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel)
