Meet The Man Behind The Popular Chupa Chups Logo, A Delightful Lollipop That Is Still Relished Widely

There鈥檚 something delightful about a lollipop; it鈥檚 not just a candy, but it鈥檚 a complete burst of joy packed on a stick. But one brand has managed to wrap more than sugar; it carries the stamp of a genius who invented the logo of a popular brand. The bright daisy-like logo of Chupa Chups was designed by none other than Salvador Dali, the mastermind behind melting clocks and dreamlike landscapes. The treat is not just a candy but a piece of history and art which can be felt easily. Frustrated by the mess made by eating traditional sweets, he had a simple idea to put candy on the stick to minimise the mess. This is how the world鈥檚 first modern lollipop was born and with it, the name Chupa Chups, from the Spanish world Chupar, meaning to suck. How was Salvador Dali involved?By the late 60s, Chupa Chups was already a hit, but Bernat wanted to elevate the brand鈥檚 image. Salvador Dali is one of Spain鈥檚 most famous artists. Though already a global art icon, Dali didn鈥檛 dismiss the request as beneath him. Instead, he reportedly sat in a caf茅, grabbed a napkin, and within an hour sketched what would become the company鈥檚 enduring logo: The brand name placed inside a yellow daisy. But Dali鈥檚 contribution didn鈥檛 end with design. He also had a vision for visibility; he insisted that the logo should be placed on top of the lollipop rather than on the side so it would be visible no matter how it is wrapped or consumed. In a time when branding was still at its initial stage, Dali understood the power of repetition and constant visual presence. Slogan for Chupa Chups鈥淭he logo debuted with the Catalan slogan, ‘脡s rod贸 i dura moult, Chupa Chups,’ which translates to the somewhat underwhelming, ‘It鈥檚 round and long-lasting.鈥 Despite its simplicity, the brand鈥檚 appeal continued to grow,鈥 according to the official website of Chupa Chups. In the 1980s, Chupa Chups even ventured into anti-smoking campaigns to attract adult customers, too. One slogan, according to their website was, 鈥溾淪moke Chupa Chups,鈥 was followed by the cheeky, 鈥淪top smoking, start sucking.鈥 Packaging designs also parodied cigarette packs, complete with mock warning labels like, 鈥淪ucking does not kill,鈥 adding a playful twist to their branding. Today, Chup Chups lollipops are sold in over 150 countries in more than 100 flavours. Yet despite evolving tastes and marketing tactics, Dali鈥檚 logo remains unchanged, which stands as a symbol of how timeless a design can be, especially when it is packed with thinking and a genius mindset. Enric Bernat passed away in 2003, leaving behind a legacy brand. His son now serves as president of Chupa Chups, and the company is owned by the multinational Perfetti Van Melle, which also presents brands like Mentos and mint. So next time, when you enjoy a delightful lollipop from the brand, take a second to check the logo and how it is placed. The lollipop is definitely more than just a logo and also serves as a sweet reminder that even the most ordinary things can be perfect when perfected with little effort.
