Truly caring society Josephine Vella of Birkirkara writes: Let us promote a culture of life and not of death. These words are expressed over and over again by those who value life as a precious gift from God and/or those who believe in a just and inclusive society with opportunities for all, including the vulnerable. The concept of the culture of life was reflected in the recently held Premju Formidabbli event. As Nationalist Party deputy leader Alex Perici Calascione said when addressing specifically Ivan Bartolo and his team, the idea to originate such an award (rewarding those offering a voluntary service to society despite their own health issues) is formidable in itself. It drives the message home that all individuals are unique, capable of living a fulfilled life with dignity when efforts are acknowledged and their commitment encouraged, especially to sustain a caring society. Bartolo provided a shining example of solidarity and generosity when, a few years ago, he donated a kidney and saved the life of a patient he never knew. Of course, this is an experience par excellence but does not diminish in any way the merits of all achievements against all odds while surpassing all impediments to help others – not only by the participants and winners of Premju Formidabbli but, equally, in everyday life. As Perici Calascione concluded, let us not think of Formidabbli as an annual event but as a source of inspiration for our everyday life. It is when such politicians, among them Bartolo, are attracted to public life that we can guarantee a sound truly caring society beneficial to all. Memorable experience Mark John Galea of Sliema writes: On Sunday, June 22, my mother and I had the opportunity of being near Santa Maria Maggiore church in Rome at the conclusion of the celebration of Corpus Christi. It was a very touching experience and it was very moving to have witnessed the pope at a major event. We felt humbled, as did the other pilgrims and the crowd of onlookers. Santa Maria Maggiore is a very beautiful basilica, and being there was an unforgettable experience. Corpus Christi is the feast that honours the institution of the Holy Eucharist. It celebrates the real presence of the body of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. It was very moving to see the arrival of the procession of the pope and the pilgrims from the basilica of St John Lateran. As it was incredible to see Pope Leo holding up the Holy Eucharist in front of the church. I will never forget this event and cherish the memories.
