Just half of Democrats consider themselves patriots, compared to 91% of Republicans, poll reveals

Red, white and blue is becoming red vs. blue.

As Americans celebrate Independence Day, patriotism itself is becoming a source of division, according to a new poll shared exclusively with The Post.

The survey conducted by New Jersey-based GOP firm National Research Inc., found that 91% of self-identified Republicans call themselves patriots, compared to just 50% of Democrats.

The poll showed a near-identical schism among 2024 voters, with 90% of those who backed President Trump identifying as patriots compared to 55% of former Vice President Kamala Harris supporters.

Among self-described conservatives, 87% deemed themselves a patriot, compared to 51% of liberals, per the poll.

National Research founder Adam Geller, a Republican pollster and strategist whose resume includes work for Trump鈥檚 2016 campaign, told The Post that while the results may stem in part from 鈥渁 little leftover saltiness鈥 from the election, 鈥渨e need to have a country where even if you don鈥檛 love the president, you鈥檙e still proud to be an American 鈥 you still hold those values.鈥

Geller鈥檚 findings mirror other polls about national sentiment.

According to a recent Gallup poll, just 36% of Democrats called themselves 鈥渆xtremely鈥 or 鈥渧ery鈥 proud to be an American, plummeting from 62% in 2024 and the lowest level among the demographic this century.

Just over half (53%) of independents said they were extremely or very proud to be American, down seven percentage points from last year.

Republican pride in the US spiked by seven percentage points to 92%.

Overall, a record low 58% of respondents were extremely (41%) or very (17%) proud to be an American, a nine-point dip from last year.

Back in January of 2001, Gallup gauged that 87% of US adults were very or extremely proud, a figure that jumped to 91% after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Gallup also determined that Gen Z had the least amount of national pride, with only 41% calling themselves very or extremely proud to be an American, compared to 58% of Millennials, 71% of Generation X and 75% of Baby Boomers.

鈥淚t is a surprising finding, and sobering,鈥 Geller said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a little breathtaking.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檝e established the fact that on average the left is about 50% [proud of America]. Why? What is it? That鈥檚 the part I don鈥檛 know yet,鈥 he said. 鈥淭o me the next step is understanding what is going on in our country right now.鈥

Geller鈥檚 poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters June 21-23 with a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points.

The Gallup poll surveyed 1,000 adults June 2-19 with a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.0 percentage points.
