Pop star Charli xcx is no stranger to the spotlight, and now she’s sharing her love for a particular horror film with her fans. The 32-year-old singer has had quite a year following the release of Brat, her most successful album to date, and now everyone is keen to see where she’ll steer pop culture next.
Charli’s followers look to her for the latest trends in music, fashion, and film, so when her secret social media account was leaked, they were all ears. The party-loving singer’s hidden Letterboxd account (itscharlibb) was unearthed by fans, revealing over 100 film ratings and reviews.
As soon as word got out about her page, Charli gained a whopping 200k followers and took to TikTok to share more about her viewing habits.
In a TikTok video, the artist shared her fondness for the 1982 film The Appointment, directed by Lindsey C. Vickers.
She said: “This is very surreal. Very uncanny. It kind of reminds me of British TV shows I grew up watching, like The Queen’s Nose; there’s just something odd about it. Kind of like Twin Peaks vibes… I just really loved this movie.”
The Appointment is a British horror film that serves as a “warning to parents”. It tells the story of Ian, who fails to attend his daughter’s violin concert, leading to her hurt feelings manifesting as a strange force within their home. Despite the era’s trend for gory slasher films, The Appointment relies on a chilling atmosphere to unsettle its audience.
According to her Letterboxd page, pop sensation Charli xcx watched the film on May 26 and didn’t hesitate to share her thoughts online. The Mirror US reports that she revealed plans to watch a slew of films while travelling and expressed delight that The Appointment was her first choice, describing it as “so IT”.
In her refreshingly honest review, Charli wrote: “I’m so happy I got a hold of this (shout out Dylan if you’re reading this). Lyndsey Vickers is ‘goated’ in my book, but I guess maybe the film bombed and he never got the chance to make another (someone fact-check that I didn’t do much research).”
She also mentioned a BBC documentary titled Impressions of Richmond that predates the film, which she imagines to be “sprawling and gorgeous”. Charli concluded her review by expressing anticipation for The Lake, but for now, she remains captivated by The Appointment, praising its “brooding, uncanny, odd” qualities and celebrating its British origins.
The songstress has also recently enjoyed the latest Danny Boyle film, 28 Days Later, Sophia Coppola’s The Bling Ring and a 1995 fashion documentary, Unzipped. It’s evident that her passion for cinema is more profound than fans might have realised, and it appears Charli will continue to delve deeper into her online reviews in the coming weeks.
After years of being elusive, The Appointment is no longer hidden away and is now available to watch on Amazon Prime.
