Police in Mangochi have arrested a 52-year-old man, identified as Godi Kanjira, popularly known as Savimbi, for allegedly obstructing, insulting, and assaulting immigration officers, as well as maliciously damaging government property.
According to Mangochi Police Spokesperson Amina Daudi, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon near Namitunda Estate along the Bakili Muluzi Highway, where six immigration officers from Chiponde Border Post had set up an ad-hoc roadblock.
Daudi reports that while the officers were performing their duties, Savimbi approached at high speed, deliberately knocked down four reflective cones, and fled the scene. The officers pursued him and caught up with him at Sailesi Trading Centre.
There, Savimbi allegedly mobilized villagers and incited a violent confrontation. He is reported to have used a catapult to pelt stones at the officers, injuring one on the left cheek, who was later treated as an outpatient at Chiponde Health Centre.
Savimbi is also said to have entered a nearby butchery, where he took a panga knife and threatened the officers before fleeing once again.
The matter was later reported to the police, and Savimbi was arrested the following day in Mangochi Township. He is expected to appear in court soon to answer multiple charges once all necessary paperwork is completed.
Savimbi ‘Godi Kanjira’, hails from Saiti Kadzuwa Village, under Traditional Authority Mponda, in Mangochi District.
